Frequently Asked Questions

What is Matter communication protocol?

Matter is a new smart home standard supported by major companies such as Apple, Google, and Amazon. It addresses several issues around smart home devices, including security, interoperability, and privacy. Matter allows smart devices to communicate among themselves - irrespective of their manufacturer.

Will old devices work with Matter?

That depends, honestly. In its current form, Matter supports devices that connect to the internet through Ethernet, Wi-Fi and a new low-power wireless network called Thread, which is basically an application layer on which Matter is based. Matter also supports Bluetooth, but only during the initial setup of a device.

How can the devices be made compatible with the Matter protocol?

The Big 4 - Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Google Home support Matter. That means one can use any of their apps, hubs, smart speakers and/or smart voice assistants as Matter controllers and pair them directly to the smartphone for ease of convenience and use.

What is the difference between Matter Vs Thread?

Matter protocol prioritizes device interoperability and security by providing a universal connectivity standard, while Thread prioritizes device connectivity and reliability in home automation by using mesh networking.Together, Matter and Thread can complement each other, with Matter providing a standard for different devices to communicate and Thread providing a reliable and resilient mesh network for those devices to connect to.

What platforms does Matter support?

Matter protocol is designed to be a universal connectivity standard that supports a wide range of platforms, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread. It also supports various types of devices, including smart home devices, commercial buildings, and industrial applications. Additionally, Matter is designed to be compatible with multiple voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant.
