About the LEMP stack

LEMP exists because Apache’s process-per-connection model starts to strain under high concurrency, and swapping in NGINX’s event-driven architecture solves that without changing anything else about the stack. Intuz’s LEMP AMI puts Linux, NGINX, MySQL, and PHP on Amazon EC2, with a free version covering NGINX, PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin, and a paid version adding Webmin for broader server management.

Because NGINX handles a large number of simultaneous connections more efficiently than Apache’s traditional model, this stack tends to be the better choice for high-traffic PHP applications, particularly ones that serve a lot of static assets alongside dynamic content, without needing a CDN to compensate for server-side bottlenecks.

phpMyAdmin ships in both versions for MySQL database management directly from a browser, and the paid tier’s Webmin addition extends that convenience to file transfers, cron jobs, and general server administration without requiring SSH for routine tasks.

Security follows the same pattern as Intuz’s other AMIs here: HTTPS access, a self-signed SSL certificate, and password recovery, snapshot, and update management scripts are all configured by default, so the stack is production-ready rather than a bare server needing a hardening pass.

If your application doesn’t specifically need NGINX’s concurrency advantages, or your team is more familiar with Apache’s configuration syntax and .htaccess-based rules, the LAMP AMI runs the same PHP application code with Apache instead, a straightforward swap if NGINX isn’t a hard requirement.

LEMP and phpMyAdmin Free Stack

Intuz LEMP Stack greatly simplifies the development and deployment of PHP applications. The LEMP configuration replaces the Apache web server component with nginx to increase the ability of the server to scale in response to demand.

It includes ready-to-run versions of NGINX, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin and all other software required to run each of those components.
